We invite teachers and the public to a unique Mini-Culture Camp exploring the night sky through Indigenous and Western lenses. Join us for three immersive sessions led by expert presenters:

Understanding the Stars with Alice Konig: Step into the Star Theatre for a captivating guided exploration of the constellations.

Explore the Night Sky

Explore the night sky during daylight hours with the Kerry Wood Nature Centre's mobile planetarium. Learn to recognise the patterns of the constellations, and listen to their myths and stories. Experience the motion of the night sky to better understand our place within the Universe.

The 13 Moons with Jason Bigcharles: Discover Cree teachings on the lunar year, focusing on the spiritual awakening of Sâkipakâwi-pesim (the May Moon) and preparations for the June Summer Solstice.

The 13 Moons – Month of May and June Summer Solstice Cree Teachings

In this session, Jason will briefly teach about the Cree lunar year and the 13 Moons. The month of May, Sâkipakâwi-pesim is taught to be a time of spiritual awakening to Cree peoples as the plants and trees begin to show their spirits. Learn the Cree teachings about the full moon of May. This moon is also the preparation for the upcoming solstice moon in June that marks a very special time of year in the lunar calendar. Jason will explore these teachings with participants.

First Nations Constellations with Brian St. Germain: Go beyond Greek and Roman myths to uncover the deep significance of Indigenous star stories. You'll even get hands-on by creating your own constellation diorama or posterboard to take home!

Constellations from a First Nations Perspective Come Alive

An Indigenous worldview of constellations will reveal their significance, meaning, and the fact that there are multiple ways of viewing and understanding their relevance, not just the Greek or Roman perspective. Come prepared to learn how to share Indigenous star stories with your students and engage them by creating a hands-on boxed diorama or posterboard of a favourite constellation connected with an Indigenous story.

Whether you are looking to enhance your classroom curriculum or simply gaze at the stars with new eyes, this camp offers a profound shift in perspective. We can't wait to see you there!

A light meal of soup and bannock will be served. Each participant will attend all three sessions.
