These sessions may serve as an invaluable resource for teachers as they deliver the Social Studies unit on family history in Grades 2–12.

How to Find your Ancestors

To start researching your family history, we will first gather what we already know. In this session, we will discuss where to look for information that can aid in your research and consider insights your family may already have. We will learn how to document this information using Pedigree Charts and Family Group Sheets. Once this is completed, you will be able to identify any gaps in the family tree, preparing you for the next steps to fill in those blanks. We will have a family to work on together to fill in these documents. When talking with family, we will share what to ask members of the family such as food, culture, and traditions handed down generation to generation. This is the family history part of the research. The session will also show how to share and display your research in different ways with others, including posters or PowerPoint.

How the West Was Won in Canada

This session will share resources to help find the missing names and dates of a family tree such as genealogical websites.census records, archives (Library and Archives Canada and Provincial Archives of Alberta), genealogical societies and more. We will explore ways to determine where people came from before moving to Western Canada, how did they know to come, and when did they arrive. We will explore records and help for each group of immigrants who now call Canada their home. Was an ancestor a homesteader and where to look to find out? Definitions and terminologies to help understand records are included. We will also show where to look for First Nations, Metis and Inuit records.
