What is the HLAT?

  • It is a measure of individual student achievement in writing to inform instruction.
  • The HLAT is an on demand, unassisted first draft writing sample (Grades 1-9, can extend to grade 12)
  • It is marked for performance (the quality of the writing) and the grade level of achievement.
  • The time devoted for students to write is up to 45 minutes.
  • The prompt used during each administration of the HLAT is the same for all grades.
  • Ideally staff will collaborate and mark the writing samples together in order to decide next steps in instruction.

Why do the HLAT?

  • Consistent writing assessment used across the school to develop common writing practices and consistent language.
  • Gives common evidence to build a continuum of writing and work towards high impact strategies to support students areas of strength and growth.
